# Klaviyo

Connect Klaviyo to Shoplift to use your Klaviyo segments and lists as audience targeting conditions in your experiments and personalizations.

If you already group shoppers in Klaviyo (VIP customers, lapsed buyers, subscribers to a specific list), you don't need to rebuild those groups in Shoplift. Connect the integration once, and every segment and list in your Klaviyo account becomes available as a trait when you build an audience.

{% hint style="info" %}
The Klaviyo integration is available on the Advanced and Pro plans.
{% endhint %}

### What Shoplift accesses in Klaviyo

Shoplift requests read-only access to your Klaviyo account. It reads your segments and lists and which of your Klaviyo profiles belong to them. Shoplift doesn't pull emails, names, or other profile details, and it never writes to Klaviyo or changes your segments and lists.

### Connect Klaviyo

You'll need admin access to both your Shoplift account and your Klaviyo account.

1. In Shoplift, go to **Settings → Integrations**.
2. Find the Klaviyo row and click **Connect**.
3. You'll be redirected to Klaviyo to sign in and authorize Shoplift. If you manage more than one Klaviyo account, make sure you're signed in to the one tied to this store.
4. Review the permissions and click **Allow**.

You'll be returned to the Integrations page, and the Klaviyo row will show a green **Connected** badge.

Shoplift authenticates with Klaviyo over OAuth, so there are no API keys to generate, paste, or rotate.

After you connect, Shoplift starts syncing your segments and lists. Small ones are ready almost immediately. Large ones can take longer, and shoppers in a segment that's still syncing won't see the experience until syncing finishes. You can create experiences right away.

{% hint style="info" %}
If several of your stores share one Klaviyo account, every segment and list in that account is available to each store. Build store-specific segments in Klaviyo to target the right shoppers.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
You can also start the connection from the Audiences page. If Klaviyo isn't connected yet, a banner at the top of the page takes you straight into the same flow.
{% endhint %}

### Check your connection status

The Klaviyo row on **Settings → Integrations** always shows the current state of the integration:

| Status       | What it means                                                                                                             |
| ------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Connected | Shoplift can read your segments and lists. Klaviyo targeting is available when you build an audience. |
| Disconnected | There's no active authorization. Klaviyo traits are unavailable, and any live experience using them is paused. |
| Error | The authorization exists but is failing, usually because it expired or was revoked in Klaviyo. Reauthorize to restore it. |

If your connection breaks, Shoplift shows an in-app alert so you can fix it before it affects a running experience.

### Reauthorize a broken connection

Authorizations can expire, and someone with access to your Klaviyo account can revoke Shoplift's access from Klaviyo's side. When that happens:

1. Go to **Settings → Integrations**.
2. Click **Reauthorize** on the Klaviyo row.
3. Sign in to Klaviyo and approve the permissions again.

You can also reauthorize directly from the banner on a paused experience's report. Once the connection is restored, resume the experience from its report page.

### Disconnect Klaviyo

1. Go to **Settings → Integrations**.
2. Click the ⋮ menu on the Klaviyo row and choose **Disconnect**.
3. Confirm.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Disconnecting pauses live experiences. Any experiment or personalization that targets a Klaviyo segment or list is paused automatically when the integration is disconnected, because Shoplift can no longer read who belongs to that audience. Reconnect and resume the experience to start collecting data again.
{% endhint %}

Audiences that use Klaviyo traits are not deleted when you disconnect. They stay in your Audiences list and become usable again once you reconnect.

### Using Klaviyo segments and lists for targeting

Once Klaviyo is connected, your segments and lists become traits you can use to build a Shoplift audience, the same way you'd use UTM source, country, or a cookie. Add that audience to an experiment or a personalization, and Shoplift only shows the experience to shoppers who belong to the segment or list you picked.

This is useful when the group you want to reach already lives in Klaviyo. A few ways to use it:

* **Reward VIPs.** Show a loyalty-focused homepage personalization to your VIP Customers segment.
* **Win back lapsed buyers.** Send a win-back email to your Lapsed 90 Days segment and greet those shoppers with a matching landing page when they click through.
* **Cross-sell past purchasers.** Lead with complementary products for shoppers in a "Purchased \[product]" segment.
* **Test before you personalize.** Run an experiment on your SMS Subscribers list, then roll the winner out as a personalization for that list.
* **Speak to a specific community.** Tailor messaging and imagery for a segment you've built in Klaviyo, like a 55+ or a quiz-based segment.

#### How Shoplift matches shoppers to your Klaviyo audiences

Shoplift can recognize shoppers that Klaviyo already knows, for example shoppers who've clicked one of your Klaviyo emails or signed up through a Klaviyo form. When one of them visits, Shoplift checks whether they're in the segment or list your audience uses and shows them the experience if they are.

Expect fewer shoppers in your experience than the size of the segment in Klaviyo. Shoplift can only recognize shoppers Klaviyo knows on that browser or device, and it never makes a shopper wait while it checks. If it can't confirm a match quickly, the shopper sees your store as normal.

{% hint style="info" %}
Klaviyo audiences work best on traffic you're already driving from Klaviyo. Pointing an email or SMS campaign at the pages under test is the fastest way to build a usable sample.
{% endhint %}

#### Create an audience with a Klaviyo segment or list

1. Go to **Audiences** and click **New audience**.
2. Give the audience a descriptive name, for example "Klaviyo VIPs".
3. Under **Define your audience**, open the trait dropdown and choose **Klaviyo Segment** or **Klaviyo List**. Both are marked with the integration icon.
4. Choose an operator. Use **is any of** to include the segment or list, or **is none of** to exclude it.
5. Open the value dropdown and select one or more segments or lists. Each one you pick is added as a tag below the definition.
6. Click **Create audience**.

Your new audience is now available anywhere you set targeting, in both experiments and personalizations.

#### Operators for Klaviyo segments and lists

* **is any of:** the shopper is in at least one of the selected segments or lists.
* **is none of:** the shopper is in none of the selected segments or lists.

For the full list of operators, see Audiences & Targeting.

#### Combining Klaviyo traits with other traits

You can add more than one definition to an audience. A shopper must match all definitions, and a definition with multiple values matches any of them.

So an audience with:

* Klaviyo Segment **is any of** VIP Customers, Repeat Buyers
* Country **is any of** United States

targets US shoppers who belong to either the VIP Customers segment or the Repeat Buyers segment.

#### Excluding a segment or list

Set the operator to **is none of** when you want an experience to skip a group.

Klaviyo conditions only apply to shoppers Klaviyo recognizes. An "is none of" audience includes recognized shoppers outside the segment or list. It doesn't include shoppers Klaviyo doesn't know. For example, show a first-order offer to recognized subscribers who aren't in your Purchased segment.

### When your Klaviyo audiences change

Segments and lists are living things in Klaviyo, and changing one mid-experience affects what you're measuring. Shoplift watches for two situations and handles each differently.

#### The segment or list was deleted

Deleting a segment or list in Klaviyo is permanent, and it affects experiments and personalizations differently.

**Experiments are paused.** Any experiment targeting the deleted segment or list stops, and the report shows:

> This experience was paused because the Klaviyo segment or list it targets was deleted. Deleting a segment or list in Klaviyo is permanent, so this experience cannot resume. Duplicate it and target a live segment or list.

**Personalizations keep running** for shoppers already in them, but no new shoppers can enter, since the segment no longer exists. Audience targeting can't be changed once an experience is set up, so to target a live segment or list, end the personalization and duplicate it with the new audience.

{% hint style="danger" %}
A deleted segment can't be restored, even if you recreate one with the same name. Click **Duplicate to edit** to create a copy, point it at a live segment or list, and launch it as a new experiment. Data collected before the pause stays on the original report.
{% endhint %}

#### Klaviyo was disconnected

If the integration is disconnected or its authorization breaks, every experience using Klaviyo targeting is paused, and you'll see:

> This experience was paused because Klaviyo has become disconnected. Reauthorize with Klaviyo to resume this experience.

Click **Reauthorize**, complete the Klaviyo sign-in, then resume the experience. Unlike a deleted segment, this is fully recoverable.

#### Finding audiences that depend on Klaviyo

Audiences built on a Klaviyo segment or list show a Klaviyo badge in the Audiences list, so you can see at a glance which ones break if the integration goes away. It's worth a look before you disconnect Klaviyo or clean up segments on the Klaviyo side.

### FAQ

**Does Shoplift send any data to Klaviyo?** No. The integration is read-only. Shoplift reads your segments and lists and checks membership. It doesn't create profiles, write events, or modify anything in your Klaviyo account.

**What happens to a shopper who joins the segment mid-experiment?** Once Shoplift picks up the change, the shopper becomes eligible on a later page or visit. Once a shopper has been placed in an experience, they stay in it for the life of the experience.

**Can I use Klaviyo targeting on a personalization as well as an experiment?** Yes. Klaviyo segments and lists work anywhere audiences do, including personalizations, which is where most merchants get the most value out of them.
